The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution was a campaign started by Mao Zedong in 1966 to cleanse the Communist Party of his rivals. Thousands were killed in the most brutal ways or were pushed to commit suicide. The estimated casualties up until Mao’s death in 1976 range from 1 to 5 million, with up to 50 million being persecuted or ‘struggled against’ in ‘struggle sessions’.
The images in this book were most likely taken by a Communist Party photographer. They were acquired by Lukas Birk from a secretive man in Chongqing in 2015. The images show how people in the city of Chongqing were prosecuted during this turbulent period. Lukas has combined these images with Chinese photo album designs of the same time.
