The photo Book – A Practical Workshop on Concept and Design

May 18/19/20th, from 15h to 19h

Jugoslovenska kinoteka, Uzun Mirkova 1, Belgrade

In recent years, the photo book has not only developed into an important form of presentation for photographers, it has also become an art form in its own right. Exhibitions, book fairs and university courses are dedicated to this medium, which can take on a multitude of forms. In this workshop, Lukas Birk, who has been producing photo books for two decades, will show practical examples of how to make a photo book dummy, as well as simple binding options, that can be used for small productions and artists’ books. Conceptual issues related to his, as well as the participants’ projects, will also be discussed at the end of the workshop.

Day 1: We will talk about book-making and provide examples on how books are made to help achieve a greater understanding of the process. Following this we will discuss the participants’work.

Day 2:Exploring different techniques and putting them into practice, together with the participants.

Day 3:Making a dummy book with the work of each participant.

Lukas Birk is a photographer. A storyteller. A conservator. A publisher. His multi-disciplinary projects have been turned into films, chronicles and books. A large part of Lukas’ work deals with archival material he collects while traveling or while delving into his own background. Lukas researches his imagery through investigations and explorations very often in areas that have been affected by conflict and have not yet had the chance to present existing material in an artistic form. His narratives tackle recorded history by creating alternate storylines and fictional elements, alongside commonly accepted facts. Lukas founded artist programmes with residencies in China and Indonesia and initiated large archive projects such as the Afghan Box Camera Project and the Myanmar Photo Archive. His imprint Fraglich Publishing is mainly focused around photographic history.

The workshop will be conducted in English.

Price for the full workshop: 50€for Serbian citizens, 80€for foreign nationals.
