It is hard to describe the magical stories Noor presents to us in this book about Afghanistan and Pakistan in the 70s and 80s as well as what it means to really imerce yourself in a place far away from your home. The books speaks of so many incredible encounters that seem impossible today. Here the introduction that will give you an idea of the incredible life Noor had so far:
“I USED TO PLAY IN THE ROCK BAND THE SLOTHS IN THE SIXTIES IN LOS ANGELES & THE VELVET UNDERGROUND IN NEW YORK IN THE EARLY SEVENTIES. I RAN A KUNDALINI YOGA CENTER AND TAUGHT IN TOPANGA CANYON OUTSIDE OF LOS ANGELES, THEN WENT TO HAWAII WITH $40 TO START ANOTHER CENTER ON THE ISLAND OF MAUI.I LIVED FOR 20 YEARS BETWEEN KABUL AND PESHAWAR.
I AM AMERICAN WHO BECAME MUSLIM IN AFGHANISTAN IN THE SEVENTIES.
I RODE HORSES ACROSS THE TRIBAL AREAS ON THE AFGHAN BORDER AND THE MOUNTAINS OF NORTHERN PAKISTAN AND KASHMIR. I FELL IN LOVE WITH A PATHAN COURTESAN AND DOCUMENTED MY TUMULTUOUS FOUR YEAR RELATIONSHIP WITH HER AND HER FAMILY. I HAD AN AFGHAN/CENTRAL ASIAN IMPORT BUSINESS WITH A SHOP IN LOS ANGELES. I HAD A RECORDING STUDIO IN PESHAWAR. I EXPORTED SOVIET MILITARY UNIFORMS AND OTHER GEAR BROUGHT OUT OF AFGHANISTAN DURING THE SOVIET AFGHAN WAR TO SELL IN SHOPS AND GUN SHOWS FOR MY BUSINESS “DEAD RED IMPORTS.” I DRANK TENS OF THOUSANDS OF CUPS OF TEA AND SMOKED THOUSANDS OF JOINTS WITH POLICE, MUJAHIDEEN AND MALANGS (FAQIRS). THE 60S – 70S WERE OPEN, GIVING, WELCOMING, AND PEACEFUL TIMES IN AFGHANISTAN AND PAKISTAN. INTHE 80S THINGS HAD CHANGED, ALBEIT NOT FOR THE BETTER. THE AYATOLLAHS WERE IN IRAN, THE SOVIETS WERE IN AFGHANISTAN. SAUDI FUNDED WAHABI MADRESSAS WERE STARTING UP IN PAKISTAN AND THE USA HAD THEIR FINGERS IN ALL THE POTS. ONE WASN’T AS FREE TO COME AND GO, ON THE CRUX OF MAJOR CHANGES. TIME PASSES. THESE PHOTOS WERE TAKEN BY WITH A VARIETY OF CAMERAS (USUALLY SMALL POCKET CAMERAS) TO DOCUMENT FAMILIAR STREETS AND FAMILIAR FACES. THEY ARE FROM THE MID 70S TO THE EARLY 90S.
I WILL TELL YOU ABOUT SOME OF THE PEOPLE I MET AND PLACES I SAW MORE THEN 20 YEARS AGO IN THOSE AREAS YOU MAY ONLY KNOW FROM THE NEWS HEADLINES. LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO THE HOME OF MY HEART”
