Kafkanistan is an experimental ethnographic film based on journeying to Afghanistan. It weds conventional ethnography in the anthropological sense -ethnography bound to physical spatiality- and the subjective predicament of the ethnographer. As such it is a visual expression of the perceptual experience of place and how this is developed in tandem with a sense of one’s being, particularly when dealing with fear and violence, areas that breed confusion, ambiguity and doubt. It also focuses on the futility of communicating these immediate and personal experiences because of the power of hindsight, especially in the media, and critical reflection in general, to reason, to explain away and conceptualise experiences that have often more in common with the absurd, chaotic and irrational than their opposites. Kafkanistan ist eine Welt der Vorstellung, der Erfahrung und der subjektiven Wahrnehmung. Jegliche erfahrene Information wird durch den persönlichen Filter verarbeitet und zur bisher eingespeisten Information angehängt. Der Einfluss der Medien sowie Erfahrung aus zweiter Hand mittels Geschichten wird durch weiteres verarbeiten verwandelt und in persönliche Erfahrung transformiert. Kafkanistan ist die gedankliche Welt von Kartunwhala und Smileywhala. Zwei Reisenden die im Gebiet Pakistan, Afghanistan und Iran auf Wanderschaft sind. Touristen? Diese gedanklichen Welten, welche wir in diesem Projekt visualisieren, besteht aus Fragmenten der Medien, Erzählungen von Reisenden und Einheimischen sowie eigenen Erlebnissen.
